Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Technology Degree or Bachelor of Science in medical laboratory sciences or biomedical sciences, in Immunology or a related field.
  • 2 or more years of experience in a laboratory, post undergraduate qualification, in current techniques in immunology and molecular biology, such as DNA/RNA extractions, ELISA, and Luminex.
  • Having worked under sterile Biosafety level 2 laboratory conditions
  • Willingness to work with samples from humans with infectious diseases.
  • Ability to work well in a team.
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and immunology laboratory skills.
  • The ability to prioritise large volumes of work and meet deadlines efficiently.
  •  The ability to conduct day-to-day operations of data collection activities in a large research project.
  • Good decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel, internet, and email) at intermediate level.
  • Non-South African’s must be in possession of an appropriate work permit.

The following will be advantageous:

  • Honours or Master of Science in Immunology or a related field
  • Previous experience within an immunology research environment
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • 16S RNA gene sequencing and flow cytometry experience
  • GCP or GCLP training
  • IATA training

Responsibilities:

  • Perform specialized laboratory techniques related to clinical studies.
  • Receive, verify, and ensure quality of all laboratory specimens.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory specimen storage using Freezerworks & management of samples in the biobank.
  • Assist with writing laboratory SOP’s.
  • Participate in training of post-graduate students and junior staff in laboratory techniques.
  • Recording of study data according to study guidelines.
  • Participate in equipment maintenance and standby duty for responding to alarms.
  • Ensure adequate laboratory supplies.
  • Provide and present updated relevant information at meetings.
  • Assist with sample shipment according to IATA regulations.
  • Flexibility to perform new duties/establish new protocols in the laboratory as required.

The annual cost of employment will lie between R222 629,00 to R415 041,00 depending on experience and qualifications.
